We were there and completely shocked one of the most beautiful places I've ever seen. If you are visiting Island, u must visit here Full review by ghazalefb

We were unsure about access to the canyon as we didn't have a 4 X4, but the road from route 1 was excellent, with just a small gravel drive for the carpark. Usual, expected carpark payment and access… Full review by Tour42824353594

Beautiful and unique canyon. A little busy and guard rails everywhere. The best view is the final view at the top with the waterfall and large platform. The walk to that point can be a satisfying jou… Full review by Chad2014

Your post is very helpful, especially the map. We plan to visit the canyon during a trip to Iceland in late June 2023. My wife has some mobility issues so we would prefer going to the “easier side”. How long is the trip on the “bumpy dirt road”? Could a basic small car (not 4WD) be OK on the dirt road?

Yes, we went that way accidentally when we missed our turn for the main lot. It’s a small lot off to the left and not very well marked. I didn’t think the dirt road was that bad and there were no potholes, definitely doable in a regular car. However, I don’t know if different weather conditions could change that. It’s still a bit of a walk to the canyon from there but fairly short. We also went late June.

I see that this has been closed the last couple years in the spring, but reopens around June 1st. Is this something that typically happens every spring? I am visiting the area about May 7-8, and would like to know if it will be possible to visit so I can book my airbnbs accordingly. If it is closed, will we still be able to access the an area with a great view? Or would the entrance/road be totally closed off? Thank you!

My understanding is that the previous closure had been to allow the area to recover from damage done to it after thousands of Justin Beiber fans flocked there to see it following a video …

My wife and I will be visiting Fjadrargljufur Canyon next June and we will be driving a 2wd car. I am pleased to learn that this poster believes that we will be “fine” as long as we drive slow. However, other posters note that you need to have 4wd to get to the upper canyon parking area. Could others weigh in and clarify if a 2wd car is OK. Thank you.

Good morning, if you want to drive to the upper parking lot you will need a 4x4 since the road is a mountain road (marked F206 to Laki). However if you continue the 206 you can reach the lower parking lot were a 2x2 car is sufficient. The road 206 is part asphalt and part gravel, just drive carefully on the gravel part. Hi Patricia, I saw no one who walked in the valley itself. I walked around from the upper parking lot. I think the valley itself may have been closed for visitors: "hiking up the canyon along or in the river is strictly forbidden", as it says on the official web site (can't include links here – try googling for "katlageopark fjadrargljufur". Walking around at the top is easy, with level gravel paths. Have a good trip! Jens PS: I was there last week.
