An Israeli shell slammed into the compound of the only Catholic church in the Gaza Strip, killing three people and wounding 10 others, including the parish priest, according to church officials.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said "Israeli raids" hit the only Catholic Church in Gaza, and she condemned attacks on civilians as "unacceptable."

The direct strike killed three people as confirmed by the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem hours after the attack.

An American aid organization says 20 Palestinians were killed at a distribution site in Gaza. The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation said it believed 19 died from trampling Wednesday at its food distribution center and one was stabbed.

Bodies were brought to a hospital in Gaza City after the latest Israeli strikes on the area killed 22 people, including 11 children and three women, according to health officials.

After a few minutes the guards tried to let a group of women join the front of the queue. The crowd surged forward and broke into the compound. When tear-gas grenades failed to stop the surge of desperate people, the guards stopped handing out boxes and closed the centre.

Israel has refused to renew visas for the heads of at least three United Nations agencies in Gaza. The U.N. humanitarian chief blames it on their work trying to protect Palestinian civilians in the war-torn territory.
