Cubans experienced their second black out wave Saturday after government officials said they were working to restore electrical service to hospitals and crucial service centers after a grid failure on Friday.

MIAMI: The Cuban people have been left in the dark after their nation's electrical grid collapsed Friday. "It was really frustrating because we don't know how long it will last," Omar McKenzie, a Cuban resident in Havana told CBS News Miami.

Cuba has repeatedly failed to bring its electrical grid back up as a result of fuel shortages and deteriorating infrastructure, threatening a social explosion.

Cuba's government said on Saturday it had made some progress in gradually re-establishing electrical service across the island, including to hospitals and parts of the capital Havana, after state-run media earlier reported the national grid had collapsed for a second time in 24 hours.

HAVANA — Cuba’s electrical grid collapsed again on Sunday, the fourth such failure in 48 hours as a looming hurricane threatened to wreak further havoc on the island’s decrepit infrastructure.

Many Cubans waited in anguish Sunday as electricity on much of the island had yet to be restored days after an island-wide blackout. Their concerns were also raised as Hurricane Oscar made landfall in the southeastern Bahamas and was heading toward their country.

Millions of Cubans awoke on Sunday to find their homes still without power after another partial grid failure overnight, deepening a crisis that has raised questions over the viability of the government's efforts to reestablish electrical service.

As Cuban authorities were struggling to reconnect the country’s decrepit power grid on Sunday, a category-one hurricane barrelled into the east of the island, dumping heavy rain and lashing the area with winds.

Electricity outages have paralyzed an already-crippled economy, leading to shortages of everything from cash to running water.
