The Department of Defense reached a class action legal settlement with more than 30,000 military veterans dismissed under the “Don’t ask, don’t tell” policy and earlier iterations of the policy involving troops’ sexual orientation.

The U.S. Department of Defense has agreed to overhaul its process for LGBTQ veterans to seek honorable discharges after they were barred from serving because of their sexual orientation, according to a filing in San Francisco federal court on Monday.

Thousands of LGBTQ+ US military veterans who were discharged under the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy due to their sexuality could soon have an easier path to accessing more benefits for their service,

The Pentagon has agreed to settle a class action lawsuit involving about 35,000 LGBTQ+ veterans that will help them get benefits like health care and disability.
