San Diego County Supervisor Nora Vargas, chair of the county Board of Supervisors, Friday announced her decision to step down from the board at the end of her term, Jan. 6, 2025.

Vargas, newly re-elected to a four-year term, cited ‘personal safety and security reasons’ for her sudden departure. She had faced mounting criticism in her district following a series of perceived missteps and fights with onetime allies.

Vargas had won her bid for reelection over challenger Alejandro Galicia by a margin of 50,947 votes, which translated to 24 percentage points.

Nora Vargas said Friday that she is resigning from the San Diego County Board of Supervisors in January for personal safety reasons.

"Due to personal safety and security reasons, I will not take the oath of office for a second term," she said in a statement Friday.
