SpaceX’s satellite-to-cell Starlink texting service can now operate throughout New Zealand, thanks to the telecommunications company One NZ. The New Zealand-based provider says this is the first time that a nationwide satellite text messaging service has been powered by Starlink.

At launch -- projected for early 2025 -- Starlink will support only texting, but T-Mobile shares that the service eventually will be expanding to data and voice. The free beta will provide users with high-speed internet connectivity in challenging-to-access places such as rural locations, concerts, and even airplanes.

On Monday, the telecom company shared that it has opened registration for a Starlink beta program. All T-Mobile customers can register to join the beta program and test out the satellite messaging feature. But spaces are limited, and T-Mobile is prioritizing first responder individuals and organizations, said the announcement.

The beta is "open and free" for its postpaid voice customers with a "compatible device." T-Mobile states the beta is expected to kick off in early 2025. Recently, T-Mobile and Starlink received the FCC's go-ahead for its satellite service,
