The president and director of the Louvre Museum has been summoned to appear before French lawmakers amid the ongoing investigation into the heist of priceless jewels.

Laurence des Cars, the Louvre's president and director, is set to testify about the heist before the French Senate's Culture, Education and Sport Committee on Oct. 22.

The only camera monitoring the exterior wall of the Louvre where they broke in was pointing away from the first-floor balcony that led to Gallery of Apollo housing the jewels, she said. "We failed these jewels," she said, adding that no-one was protected from "brutal criminals - not even the Louvre".

No security cameras were monitoring the second-floor balcony where thieves gained access to the Louvre to steal historic jewels worth over $100 million, the museum’s director told a French Senate committee hearing.

The director of the Louvre on Wednesday told the French Senate there was "insufficient" security camera coverage at the instutution and that she had offered her resignation – which was refused by France's culture minister – after an audacious heist on Sunday saw thieves break into the museum and steal €88 million worth of jewels.

Laurence des Cars is speaking for the first time since a gang of masked thieves - who remain at large - carried out Sunday's robbery.
