Classrooms in Alberta have been hit by a data breach that has affected schools across Canada. Parents and caregivers across the province received advisories Wednesday, informing them of a breach involving PowerSchool, an application used to store a range of student information.

A nationwide cybersecurity breach has affected software used by North Dakota public schools, North Dakota Information Technology confirmed Wednesday. It was not immediately clear if any North Dakota student or teacher data was exposed.

Union County Public Schools was among the districts whose student and teacher data was compromised by a data breach last month. Officials with the PowerSchool software company say on Dec. 28, 2024, they became aware of a potential cybersecurity incident involving unauthorized access to certain personal information through its PowerSource platform.

A data breach is impacting school districts across the country, including several here in Massachusetts, and this could mean names, addresses, medical records and even social security numbers were compromised — something local cybersecurity experts say is unsettling.
