A strong south swell has prompted a beach hazard statement from the National Weather Service through late Saturday at Los Angeles and Orange County beaches.

Just ahead of the long Independence Day weekend, beaches across the country have closed and issued advisories because of excessive levels of harmful bacteria. The culprit is fecal waste, a common summer problem in both freshwater and oceans that can cause gastrointestinal illness and skin infections.

Here is the current closure and advisory list as of Wednesday July 2: Country Club (5000 W. Shore Drive), Oakland County - CLOSED since July 1 due to high bacteria levels from storm water runoff. Devoe Beach, Cheboygan County - contamination advisory since July 1 due to high bacteria levels from an unknown source.
