The repeated failure of the power grid and a hurricane that has swamped the island’s eastern end has many Cubans fed up, posing a challenge to the Communist government.

Electricity outages have paralyzed an already-crippled economy, leading to shortages of everything from cash to running water.

"Around 50 percent of clients" now have power, Havana's electricity company said in a report published by state-run news portal Cubadebate. Power went out for the communist island's 10 million people on Friday after the collapse of the nation's largest power plant crippled the grid.

Cubans experienced their second black out wave Saturday after government officials said they were working to restore electrical service to hospitals and crucial service centers after a grid failure on Friday.

Cars drive on Havana's seafront boulevard Malecon as the country's electrical grid collapsed again on Sunday, according to Cuba's energy and mines ministry, in the latest setback to the government's efforts to restore power to the island,

Many Cubans waited in anguish Sunday as electricity on much of the island had yet to be restored days after an island-wide blackout. Their concerns were also raised as Hurricane Oscar made landfall in the southeastern Bahamas and was heading toward their country.

As Cuban authorities were struggling to reconnect the country’s decrepit power grid on Sunday, a category-one hurricane barrelled into the east of the island, dumping heavy rain and lashing the area with winds.
