Long before becoming a lawyer, state lawmaker and Virginia’s first Black House Speaker, Don Scott, D-Portsmouth, was, for years, unable to vote. After a previous felony conviction, it wasn’t until former Republican Gov.

The U.S. Department of Justice is suing Virginia, claiming Gov, Youngkin violated federal law by removing voters from the rolls within 90 days of an election.

At issue is whether or not an executive order signed by Youngkin in August directing the Department of Elections to make “daily updates” to the state’s voter rolls and “remove individuals who are unable to verify that they are citizens to the Department of Motor Vehicles” violates a federal law preventing states from systematically removing voters from the voter rolls fewer than 90 days before an election.

In response, Youngkin said he was enforcing a 2006 law signed by then-Governor Tim Kaine and called the lawsuit unprecedented and a politically motivated action to interfere with Virginia's elections.
