Memphis could possibly see a more mild winter in terms of temperature and precipitation this year. Here's what a La Niña year could mean for the Memphis area.

When La Niña is in effect, wetter than usual conditions are common in the Great Lakes region during winter. There is a 60% chance for a weak and short duration La Niña to emerge between September and November and persist into January to March, according to the National Weather Service's Climate Prediction Center.

Last year’s El Niño event brought the warmest winter on record for the continental U.S. Now, forecasters announced this week that a La Niña event is expected to develop later this year.
