There's a new, quite common E-ZPass scam text making the rounds — don't fall for it. In case you haven't heard of it, the scam text in question claims the receiver has unpaid tolls and that they need to pay their balance in order to avoid consequences such as fines or losing their license.

Drivers can go to the New Jersey E-ZPass website or app and check for any outstanding tolls or violation notices. State law also requires E-ZPass to check to see if a vehicle owner has a valid account before issuing a violation notice. In April, the NJ E-ZPass group’s advice was direct and simple, don’t respond to the text.

Targeted phone numbers appear to be chosen at random and are “not uniquely associated with an account or usage of toll roads,” MassDOT said in a statement.

Motorists in New York are being warned of a phishing scam involving fake texts from “E-ZPass NY” or “Tolls By Mail NY,” which falsely claim unpaid balances and seek sensitive personal details. The Thruway Authority stressed that neither entity requests such information via text or email.
