In the divisive America in which the Smollett something happened — Trump’s first term as president was winding down at the time — the concept of “truth” depends on which cable news channel you flip to. Legally, the case is closed. In 2023, the Illinois Supreme Court overturned his 2021 conviction, in which a jury found Smollett guilty of reporting a fake hate crime. He was sentenced to five months in prison, but he only served six days because he was let out on appeal.

Netflix documentary “The Truth About Jussie Smollett” is set to hit the streamer on Friday, Aug. 22 and feature interviews from those involved in the case and Smollett himself.
