More than 1,000 Starbucks workers will go on strike at about 65 stores scattered across states as far-flung as California, Texas and Pennsylvania, Starbucks Workers United (SWU), the union representing the workers, told ABC News in a statement.

Starbucks Workers United said its strike may extend past Nov. 13 if the coffeehouse chain continues to ignore their demands.

A labor strike by more than 1,000 Starbucks baristas in 42 cities has been timed alongside the coffee chain’s annual “Red Cup Day” giveaway.

More than 1,000 Starbucks unionized baristas in over 40 U.S. cities launched an indefinite strike on Thursday, intensifying their push for a collective bargaining agreement over increasing pay and staffing levels at the coffee giant.

The "overwhelming majority" of Starbucks locations are expected to remain open on Red Cup Day 2025. However, strikes are planned in 41 cities.

More than 1,000 unionized Starbucks workers are on strike Thursday at 65 U.S. stores. The strike has closed some stores on Starbucks’ Red Cup Day, which is typically one of the company’s busiest days of the year.

More than 1,000 workers at about 65 stores across the United States joined the labor action, the union representing baristas said.

The chain posted its biggest sales day ever in North America on Nov. 6, when it launched the 2025 holiday season with a special menu. Reusable Red Cup Day was a second win.

Starbucks Workers United is calling the strike the "red cup rebellion," since the strike coincides with the coffee chain's annual Red Cup Day promotion.
