Two unknown young women, photographed in the mid-1850s. My best estimate for this portrait is around 1854 to 1858. This beautifully intimate studio image captures a fashion moment that is very specific to the decade. Their hair is arranged in tightly braided sections and sculpted sausage curls, parted cleanly at the centre and drawn down toward the cheeks. This distinctive style was especially popular in the middle of the 1850s and is one of the strongest visual clues for dating the photograph.
