Lewis Wetzel, his father, and brothers were among the defenders of Fort Henry when it was attacked by British and Indian forces in September 1782 near the end of the Revolutionary War. Here in Wheeling WV not far from where Fort Henry stood is the “Wetzel Cave” On June 19, 1786, Wetzel's father, John, and his brother, George, were killed by Indians and his brother, Martin, was wounded while on a hunting trip.
