First day AMRAPing (capped) for this training block on deadlifts. Complete resets each rep to hopefully improve my skill and reduce injury risk. And before anyone says anything done complete resets are WAY harder. Try it if you don't believe me. Hit 520 for 10 as Ben instructed me not to exceed that number. Felt like I had at least 5 RIR. Training to failure kills your strength gains? 😱 A new study from @zac.datadrivenstrength (my powerlifting coach) examined proximity to failure in training, and it’s effect on strength. This is the same lab that did a recent meta-analysis demonstrating that training close to failure for building muscle was likely better than training further from failure Surprisingly, in this study, the researchers found that training close to failure (RPE >8) actually inhibited strength, gains, compared to tra

PRing like crazy this week. Best ever set of safety bar squats hitting 425 for 6 reps (bar is 65 lbs). Followed up with quad focused hack squats with 475 lbs for 3 sets of 10 and honestly felt easy. Focus of this training block by Andres Vargas is to recover from my meet, improve weaknesses in my lifting game such as my quad strength, and stay healthy. I am really focusing on trying to be ready for USA Powerlifting Raw Nationals, I’m not sure it’s reasonable for me to expect to be competitive th

All time deadlift PR - 725 lbs This is my best ever deadlift at this bodyweight (205 lb weight class)… at 42 years old Normally I’d wait til the weekend to post my training highlights, but I was too stoked about this This is after: - 2 lumbar herniation -2 bulged lumbar discs -2 Cervical herniation -Partially torn muscles in each hip -Partially torn adductor -Partially torn pec After I won back to back open nationals in 2014 & 2015, that began the most stressful 7 year period of my life. Announcing my entry to @napfpowerlifting North American Championships 😤 After winning Powerlifting America nationals my plan was to focus on @theipf Masters worlds in Mongolia and get my 2nd world title. However, I found out 2 of the toughest guys in my class @brujomex (3x world champ) & @mgarozzo_smg (runner up at nationals) are not doing worlds, but are doing the North American championships in Grand Cayman in August. That makes my path to a second world championship, easier… but I’m not real

Meet recap for @powerlifting_america Master’s Nationals Man this one pushed me! Coming into this meet I felt really confident & warming up all signs indicated I was READY, then I missed my opening squat (video 1) in depth. That has NEVER happened to me in my entire career I told myself a lot of lifters would let that get in their heads… I’m going to make sure it doesn’t. @benesgro asked if I wanted to take my opener over (556lbs) or go up. I told him to go up because I knew if I didn’t jump some

Pulling 300kg for the win 😊. Ended up with a 715kg/1576lb total, not even close to a PR but probably one of my most rewarding. Won the 105kg class and went 9/9. Building on this now. And most importantly... pain free! www.biolayne.com | Layne Norton

Mechanical Tension is a KEY to Building Muscle But many people totally misunderstand mechanical tension Mechanical tension isn’t just about lifting heavy. It’s about the force your muscle experiences OVER TIME. You get mechanical tension two ways: • Active tension (muscle contracting) • Passive tension (muscle being stretched) And the part most people miss: Mechanical tension is cumulative. A single max rep produces very high tension — but hypertrophy isn’t driven by one rep. It’s driven by the

Repost from @teambiolayne coach @teemillerfit As we step into 2026 with new goals, it’s time to talk about boundaries, support vs. sabotage, and growth-aligned relationships. “Skip the gym and come over.” Sounds harmless… until it isn’t. Healthy relationships don’t pull you away from your goals — they protect them. 🔹 Boundaries Someone who respects you won’t ask you to abandon commitments you made to yourself. 🔹 Support vs. sabotage Support sounds like: “Go train, I’ll see you after.” Sabotage

“Judge me now and you judge me prematurely… I have not shown you everything yet.” ~Les Brown Almost 44 years old and still crushing 😬 Weights were moving pretty well this week. No all time PRs, but the velocities on these heavy singles were feeling pretty good. Highlights: 715 Deadlift single that I smoked. That’s my 3rd heaviest deadlift of all time in competition or out & I absolutely smoked it 585 Squat that moved decent. Squats are still lagging behind deadlifts but moving in the right dire

New study says you must train to failure to make gains? Is RPE BULLSH*T??? No. A new study published by @zac.datadrivenstrength (who is coincidentally my coach who does my powerlifting programming) investigated the relationship between proximity to failure & the relationship to hypertrophy & strength This meta-regression aggravated many different studies in an effort to formulate a dose response curve. What the researchers found was that better hypertrophy outcomes tended to be associated with t

“Why do you powerlift? What’s the point?” i’ve had this question a few times recently. Most of them are people wondering why I have continue to power lift competitively at over 40 years old. After well over two decades in the lifting game, quite a few titles to my name, and a lot of scars. Why do I keep going? Quite simply, if you don’t understand then there’s no way I can explain it to you. How can you explain something that sets your soul on fire to the uninspired? How can you explain the feel

TRUST THE PROCESS! Today’s squat session was awesome. 480x8, then 515x6, then 555x4 (shown), then 520x6 (shown), then 485x8 (shown). Honestly felt like I had 3-4 reps in the tank on most sets. This is WAY different from a few months ago when I was grinding out sets with 500 ish lbs. I was feeling so discouraged. My body wasn’t moving like I wanted, everything felt terrible. I had no motivation. But I kept showing up & doing the work. Regardless of how I FELT. I had faith that if I did the

“Pregnant Women Shouldn’t Train Hard” is BS. New study breakdown! For decades, pregnant women have been told to “take it easy,” lift light, or avoid resistance training altogether — often out of fear rather than evidence. A new controlled study examined high-intensity resistance exercise during pregnancy, including squats, bench press, and deadlifts performed at 70–90% of a 10-RM, with and without the Valsalva maneuver. Researchers assessed key markers of fetal well-being, including fetal heart

My back pain got so bad that it absolutely incapacitated me. All I could do was lay on the floor, I couldn't even use the bathroom on my own. This was when I decided that if I ever wanted to compete again pain-free, I needed help. I reached out to Dr. Stuart McGill, one of the worlds leading experts on lower back pain, along with Brian Carroll and my coach Andres, a plan was formulated to rehab my lower back. In this video I take you through the exercises I did every single day to go from excruc
